Mechanism of injury – what does this mean on a fundamental level? This presentation looks at the mechanics and physics of traumatic injuries, discussing how dynamic forces work, are applied to materials, how materials react, and how this results in injury. We will look at the specifics of force, the stresses and strains they create on materials, how materials react (i.e., break), and what it takes to impart these forces onto a person and create the traumatic injury to the musculoskeletal system. With this understanding of how forces work, how they cause materials to break, and how forces are applied to the body, we gain a strong fundamentals background for helping providers be better informed in their decision-making processes in the field. While this presentation will be very heavy on the physical sciences and engineering materials properties, no background in math, physics, mechanics, or engineering is needed.
